A guide to IST
India Standard Time
India Standard Time (IST) is 5 hours and 30 minutes ahead of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). The same standard time is used across India, all year.
What does UTC+05:30 mean?
Add 5 hours and 30 minutes to a UTC time to get IST. Subtract the same amount to go from IST to UTC. If that crosses midnight, change the date too.
| UTC | India (IST) | Date in India |
|---|---|---|
| 09:00 | 14:30 (2:30 PM) | Same day |
| 18:30 | 00:00 (12:00 AM) | Next day |
| 23:45 | 05:15 (5:15 AM) | Next day |
UTC to IST: carry the date forward
Start with 21 September 2026, 20:00 UTC. Add 5 hours to reach 22 September, 01:00; add 30 minutes to get 22 September 2026, 01:30 IST (1:30 AM).
IST to UTC: move back across midnight
Start with 22 September 2026, 01:30 IST. Subtract 30 minutes, then 5 hours: 21 September 2026, 20:00 UTC. UTC+05:30 means five and a half hours, not 5.30 decimal hours.
Does India use daylight saving time?
India does not currently change its clocks for daylight saving. IST stays at UTC+05:30. This is reflected in the current IANA time zone database entry for Asia/Kolkata.
Your country may change its clocks. That means the difference between your local time and India can change during the year even though India’s time zone stays the same. For a future meeting, check the time zone rules for the meeting date.
Why does my time difference change?
For a location using UTC−05:00 in standard time, India is 10 hours 30 minutes ahead. When that location moves to UTC−04:00 for daylight saving, India is 9 hours 30 minutes ahead. At 12:00 UTC, those clocks read 07:00 and 08:00 respectively; India reads 17:30 (5:30 PM) in both cases. These are fixed-offset examples, not a claim that every location changes its clocks.
Check your current local difference. For a future date, use that location’s actual regional time zone rules, not today’s offset or the abbreviation IST alone.
What is the time difference between India and Canada?
Choose the Canadian city or region and the date first. Canada has several time zones, and daylight-saving rules vary by location. There is no single year-round “Canada time” offset to add to India time.
Toronto to India: the date matters
For Toronto, Ontario (America/Toronto), these two 2026 examples use different seasonal offsets. They do not apply to every Canadian location.
| Toronto local date and time | India date and time (IST) | India is ahead by |
|---|---|---|
| 15 January 2026, 20:00 (EST, UTC−05:00) | 16 January 2026, 06:30 | 10 hours 30 minutes |
| 15 July 2026, 20:00 (EDT, UTC−04:00) | 16 July 2026, 05:30 | 9 hours 30 minutes |
In January, Toronto’s 20:00 is 01:00 UTC the next day; add 5 hours 30 minutes for India. In July, its 20:00 is 00:00 UTC the next day, so India reads 05:30. Carry the calendar date along with the time.
Compare your city and meeting date
- Confirm the Canadian city and province with the meeting organizer. A country name or “EST” alone may not identify the intended local time.
- Open Dateful’s city and date converter (external site). Select the Canadian city and an Indian city such as Kolkata, choose DATE to show the date fields, then set the meeting’s date and local starting time.
- Check both result dates and the selected city/time-zone labels before sharing. Around a clock change, confirm any repeated or missing local time with the organizer. Recheck future meetings if local rules change.
For a comparison right now, if your device is set to the correct Canadian local time zone, compare India with your current local time. This site’s live comparison does not let you choose a different city or a future appointment.
Canadian regional rules and Toronto examples checked 24 September 2026 against the National Research Council’s time-zone guidance, Ontario’s Time Act and IANA’s America/Toronto rules.
Which time zone should I choose on my device?
Look for India, Kolkata or Asia/Kolkata. Some systems use the older label Calcutta. New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai and Kolkata share the same standard time.
When arranging a meeting internationally, write “India Standard Time (UTC+05:30)” and include the date. The abbreviation “IST” alone can be ambiguous outside India.
Why can India have a different date?
A time difference can cross midnight. At the same instant, the date in India can be earlier or later than your local date. A clock time without its date can therefore be misleading.
| Reference clock | India (UTC+05:30) | Date relationship |
|---|---|---|
| 16 September 2026, 18:30 UTC | 17 September 2026, 00:00 | India is on the next day |
| 17 September 2026, 00:00 at UTC+14 | 16 September 2026, 15:30 | India is on the previous day |
Can India and my location be in different years?
Yes. The year changes with the local calendar date, not everywhere at once. These two fixed examples refer to different instants:
| Reference date and time | India date and time (IST) | Relationship |
|---|---|---|
| 31 December 2026, 20:00 UTC | 1 January 2027, 01:30 (1:30 AM) | India is in the next year |
| 1 January 2027, 01:00 at UTC+14 | 31 December 2026, 16:30 (4:30 PM) | India is still in the previous year |
In the first example, add 5 hours 30 minutes to UTC and carry the date into 2027. In the second, subtract 14 hours from the reference time to get 31 December 2026, 11:00 UTC, then add 5 hours 30 minutes for India. India is 8 hours 30 minutes behind a UTC+14 location, so “India is always a day ahead” would be incorrect.
Compare India with your local date now to capture both dates and offsets together. The snapshot uses your device settings and can be copied as text. It is a current-time comparison, not a converter for a future appointment.
How accurate is this clock?
This site reads the time from your device and uses your browser’s time zone data to display it in India. It does not synchronize with an atomic clock or measure your clock’s error. An incorrect device time will produce an incorrect display. Troubleshoot device time, local time zone or a blank clock.
The two clocks on the home page use the same instant. The page reads the device clock again every second and when you return to it, so it does not keep counting from an old page-load time.
